London Breeze Film Festival 2025 Spatial Storytelling

Riverside Studios, London, UK

My work < Debris > was exhibited at SPATIAL STORYTELLING as part of the London Breeze Film Festival at the Riverside Studios, in collaboration with the Royal College of Art School of Communication and Off Site Project.

Returning for its second year, SPATIAL STORYTELLING presents an immersive one-day showcase of RCA graduates who explore the boundaries of narrative space through virtual reality, interactive media, and digital installations.

A big thank you to Dr Atif Ghani of the RCA SoC and to everyone at London Breeze Film Festival, Off Site Project and Riverside Studios for making this happen.

‘Debris’ is an immersive interactive installation, co-created with Niy, that aims to evoke a profound reflection on tropical cyclone disasters through a multi-sensory experience.

To the Underground 人逝间

Chinese people believe the deceased will travel to a world where gods, ghosts, and good and evil spirits coexist. It is a common lived experience for them to create a temporary middle ground connecting the world (人间) and the underworld (逝间) through daily witchcraft rituals. Offerings and performances are dedicated to the deceased and supernatural beings: People burn paper-made offerings (joss paper, hell money, and daily necessities made of paper) for the departed loved ones to enable them a decent life in the underworld; and kneel, parade and dance in front of images and buildings symbolising supernatural beings, conveying fear, affection or respect to them to avoid calamities and pray for rewards from them. With animistic beliefs, Chinese people seek well-being through witchcraft rituals in a vast network according to the principles of utilitarianism.
The popularity of such everyday witchcraft rituals reveals a dynamic relationship between the modern and the non-modern in China: while scientific, rational, and progressive ideas overwhelmingly guide public construction and social life, primitive, irrational, witchcraft knowledge and experience remain an important parameter that structures the Chinese spiritual world and drives Chinese behaviour. The observation and investigation of these everyday witchcraft rituals helps to sketch a uniquely Chinese contemporary humanistic picture, and to explain Chinese thinking patterns and action strategies from a unique perspective.
In this group exhibition, artists employ contemporary media to perform various witchcraft rituals that open ways ‘To the Underworld’ (人逝间), attempting to unfold the rich possibilities for preserving, representing, and activating minority knowledge and experiences excluded from the narrative of modernity, as well as marginalised voices that are left out of mainstream history writing. Audiences are encouraged to draw inspiration from the combination of witchcraft, contemporary art, and emerging technologies to consider how we can redefine and renew ourselves in an ever-changing world.
